A new category of domain name was introduced in March this year.  Along with .com.au, .net.au and asn.au etc you can now also register the direct .au.  For example, flowers.com.au can also be flowers.au

If you have a domain name ending in .au and it was registered before March this year, you may have priority allocation to register your direct .au domain name, but you need to apply before the deadline.

The deadline for registering for priority is 20 September 2022, so don’t delay if this is important to your business.

Why it might be important

If you have already have a .net.au or .com.au website, it may be worthwhile protecting your brand name and identity.  There is a risk that webname ‘campers’ and cyber criminals could buy your direct .au domain name for unscrupulous purposes.

After the 20th September deadline, all direct .au domain names that have not been allocated to a priority business will be on the open market for sale.

What you need to do

  1. Head to .auDA to find out if you are a priority domain
  2. If you are considered a priority, apply for a priority token
  3. Get in touch with your domain name They will have received your priority token and from there you can buy your direct .au domain.
